Why it matters

Right to Rent. Landlords in England are legally required to check that every adult tenant has the right to rent in the UK before the tenancy starts. Fines can reach £20,000 per tenant, and updated Home Office guidance applies to all tenancies from 1 October 2026.

Right to Work. Every UK employer must check that people have the right to work before they start. From 1 October 2026, this extends beyond employees to contractors, zero-hours and gig workers, with fines of up to £60,000 per worker.
